Where to stay in Sabang for the Underground River

Everything else about Sabang — the beach, the resorts, the dark sky — is a bonus. The product is a 08:00 departure that the day-trippers cannot reach.

The Underground River is open 08:00–16:00 only, and the vans out of the city arrive in Sabang from about 10:00 onwards. One do-it-yourself blogger counted two boats at the cave when they arrived early and twenty when they left. Sleeping in the village puts you in the first group. In high season that is the difference between a 45-minute paddle and a 45-minute paddle preceded by an hour or two at the wharf, which is the single most-repeated complaint in the review corpus.

The permit still has to be sorted before you get here. The park's own notice board is explicit that turning up in Sabang, or sleeping there, guarantees you nothing. Sleeping in the village buys you the time slot, not the entry — the permits page explains how to hold one.

The second reason is the village itself. Sabang after 16:00, when the day-trippers have gone, is one of the better beach evenings in Palawan: a single street, surf you can hear from bed, generator-and-solar power, and a night sky the city cannot give you. Sabang Beach holds 376 TripAdvisor reviews and most of the good ones were written by people who stayed.

The reason not to: it is 1.5–2.5 hours each way from everything else, connections north to El Nido via the Salvacion junction are clunky and most people backtrack toward the city, and one night is genuinely enough unless you are adding the mangrove paddle or the jungle trail.

Same buildings, same beach, same pools. If a guide still calls it the Sheridan, that guide has not been updated — but the branding is genuinely still in flux.

Four Points by Sheraton Palawan and the Sheridan Beach Resort & Spa are the same property. It sits on the same stretch of Sabang beach it always did, with the same pools, the same spa and the same South Sea restaurant. The exact rebrand date is disputed across our sources and sheridanbeachresort.com was still self-marketing at the August 2026 check, so we are not going to print a date. What matters practically: book under either name and you will arrive at the same reception, and if you find two listings at different prices for what looks like two hotels, compare them — they are one.

The inland Sheridan Organic Farm and Resort is a separate, genuinely different property — a farm setting away from the beach, scoring 7.5. Do not book it expecting the beachfront one.

This matters beyond trivia because it is a live freshness signal. Most competing content still says Sheridan, which tells you when it was last touched and how much of the rest of its price data you should trust.

Draw cash in the city, and draw more than feels reasonable. Tours, tricycles, markets and most restaurants are cash. Foreign cards are charged about ₱250 per withdrawal at nearly every bank and per-transaction limits run ₱10,000–20,000. Airport machines empty at weekends and around the 15th and 30th. Sabang is effectively an ATM desert — arrive with the whole stay in your pocket. Always decline the machine's offer to charge you in your own currency.

Concretely, for a Sabang overnight: the park fee stack is ₱900–1,100 per person on site — ₱500 entrance, ₱150 environmental fee, ₱85 compulsory audio guide, ₱5–10 terminal fee and ₱150–350 for the shared boat. Add your room, meals at ₱150–400 a plate, and any add-ons. A couple doing one night at a budget lodge with the river should carry ₱5,000–6,000; at Daluyon or Four Points, plan on paying the room by card at checkout and still carrying ₱3,000 for everything the resort does not sell you.
