Quick answer
DEPENDS El Nido gets most of your nights. This city gets two of them, and only if the Underground River is on your list.

El Nido is better than this city at the thing you came to Palawan for, and pretending otherwise would make everything else on this site worthless. The limestone lagoons and the gin-clear water are 280 km and 5½ hours north, and no amount of writing changes it. What Puerto Princesa holds is everything around the water: a UNESCO river under a mountain, the island's cheapest and most frequent flights, real hospitals, working wifi, food locals actually eat, and no crowd. The formula repeated across 2024–2026 itinerary threads is El Nido 4–6 nights, Puerto Princesa 0–2 — and 2026 is the first year El Nido's own backlash has started moving that number.

El Nido

The postcard, and it earns the title. Four island-hopping tours, limestone karst straight out of the water, and scenery this city cannot approach. It also now carries about 500,000 arrivals a year against 150,000–200,000 pre-pandemic, and the strain shows in the 2025–26 threads. Stay at Caalan Beach or south of town rather than in the centre and most of the complaints evaporate.

Puerto Princesa

The hometown to El Nido's postcard: a working city of 316,384 people where the flights land, the hospitals are, the wifi works and dinner costs a third of what it does up north. It owns the one attraction El Nido cannot duplicate — 45 minutes under a mountain at the end of a 7–10 hour day. It does not own a beach worth the trip, and the June 2026 forum verdict stands: none within two hours of the port. Full verdict →

WORTH IT The one window where this city genuinely wins

August and September

Reverse the whole comparison in the monsoon. The habagat swell is what cancels boat days, and El Nido is boat days. The cave under the mountain does not care about rain, Honda Bay is comparatively sheltered, and this is the only base in Palawan with real hospitals and reliable internet. A June 2026 thread on where to base in August and September answered: Puerto Princesa is your safest base. Full verdict →

What changed up north

El Nido's own 2026 backlash, quoted

This is the part competing comparisons leave out, and it is the only reason the nights-here number has moved at all since 2019.

A thread running May to July 2026 titled on unbearable night-time noise pollution in El Nido centre ran to 17 replies. A US tourist described modified-muffler scooter noise as "acoustic violence" and filed formal complaints with the municipal tourism office. In the same month a long-standing regular called El Nido town "a tourist cesspool with pollution, overcrowding, and noise" and advised people to stay at Caalan Beach or south of town instead. In August 2025 another regular wrote that El Nido is "anything but quiet these days" and "busy even in low season".

The volume behind those complaints is documented. El Nido went from 150,000–200,000 pre-pandemic arrivals to about 500,000 a year, and recorded 500,408 in 2023 against a 2019 peak of 311,724 — roughly 60% past its own record. Puerto Princesa's 529,000 in 2023 was up 76% year on year and still below its own pre-pandemic volume. One place is absorbing more than it was built for; the other has room.

None of that makes this city prettier. It does mean the two-night stop is easier to defend in 2026 than it was in 2019, and that the answer to "where do I sleep in El Nido" is increasingly "not in the centre". Port Barton has absorbed some of the same demand — it is the anti-El-Nido, three and a half hours north for ₱600, and the fastest-rising recommendation in the 2025–2026 threads.

Between the two

The 280 km, and how people actually cross it

There is no flight between the two. The comparison always ends up being a comparison of road options, so here they are.

280 km, fully paved, average van speed about 50 km/h. Lexxus shuttle vans are ₱650 and 5 hours 30, leaving the New Market in San Jose at 07:00, 08:00, 09:30, 11:00, 13:00, 15:00 and 17:00. Fortwally and Eulen Joy do free hotel or airport pickup at ₱700–800. Cherry Bus runs ₱651 economy at 07:00, ₱840 air-conditioned at 09:00 and ₱998 Lazyboy at 11:00 and 21:30, taking about six hours with a real 15 kg allowance. A private van is ₱7,200–9,000 for the vehicle, which is about ₱1,200 a head for a family of six to eight.

The El Nido van is the least-loved product in Palawan, and the numbers agree: the bestselling shared transfer holds 3.3 stars across 607 reviews while every tour in this city sits above 4.3. Drivers are fast, vans get crammed, and a Puerto Princesa resident reported two crashes involving foreign passengers within a single fortnight of 2025. The air-conditioned bus is an hour or two slower, materially more comfortable, and takes real luggage. It is the answer for anyone travelling with children, big bags, or a low tolerance for mountain roads.

The alternative is to skip this city entirely: fly Manila to Lio on AirSwift, about 1 hour 15 for roughly $80–140 and up. That is the structural threat to this city and it is worth naming — but the aircraft are small, hold space is extremely limited, and the seats sell out early. With heavy bags, routing through here is the more robust plan. Full detail on the getting-north page and the van versus bus comparison.

Two towns, two very different price levels

The honest framing: El Nido gets the nights and this city gets the river day. Local reference prices are ₱2,000–2,500 for the Underground River here and ₱650 for the van north.

Questions people actually search

Puerto Princesa vs El Nido, answered

Is Puerto Princesa or El Nido better?

El Nido, for what almost everyone flies to Palawan for — and it is not close on water or scenery. This city wins on flights, cost, food, wifi, hospitals and quiet. The itinerary formula repeated across 2024–2026 threads is El Nido 4–6 nights and Puerto Princesa 0–2.

Should I skip Puerto Princesa and go straight to El Nido?

If the Underground River is not on your list, yes — one buffer night and the 07:00 van. Roughly 60–70% of expert forum replies take that view. If the river is on your list, two nights, because the tour runs 7 to 10 hours and cannot be compressed.

How far is El Nido from Puerto Princesa?

280 km on a fully paved highway, about 5½ hours by van at an average of 50 km/h, or roughly 6 hours by Cherry Bus. Vans are ₱650, buses ₱651–998, and a private vehicle is ₱7,200–9,000. There is no flight between the two.

Is El Nido too crowded now?

In the centre, by 2026, arguably yes. El Nido carries about 500,000 arrivals a year against 150,000–200,000 pre-pandemic, and a May 2026 thread ran to 17 replies on night-time noise, with one regular calling the town a tourist cesspool. Staying at Caalan Beach or south of town is the standing fix.

Is the scenery in Honda Bay the same kind of thing as El Nido?

No, and that is the honest answer to a question asked verbatim on the forums. Honda Bay is three flat sandbar islands at 4.0/5 from 2,040 reviews; El Nido is limestone cliffs and lagoons. One traveller called them poles apart — relaxation against intensity — which is fair in both directions.

Which is better in the rainy season?

This city, in August and September specifically. The habagat swell takes away boat days and El Nido is boat days; the cave runs year-round. October is the wettest month here at 266 mm across 21 days, and the river still runs on most of them.

Where should I stay if I want quiet in Palawan?

Port Barton, 3.5 hours north for ₱600, is the fastest-rising answer in the 2025–2026 threads — described as way more laid-back and way less touristy, with the honest caveat that there is not a lot to do and less when it rains.

Can I day trip to El Nido from Puerto Princesa?

No. It is 5 to 6 hours each way, so an 11-hour round trip in a van for a few hours of lagoon. The organised version exists and it is a bad buy. Move your bags and sleep there instead — the van is ₱650 and runs seven times a day.

The clean split is 4 to 6 nights in El Nido and 0 to 2 here, and the booking pattern follows: El Nido rooms are the ones to lock early because 576 properties absorb about 500,000 arrivals a year, while this city's 411 properties are cheap, plentiful and rarely full outside Holy Week, Christmas and IRONMAN week in mid-November.
