Puerto Princesa in wet season, honestly

The cave runs year-roundKeep 1 buffer dayCheapest rooms of the year
Quick answer
WORTH IT Come — but build one buffer day behind the Underground River, and front-load anything on the west coast onto the calmest forecast morning.

Wet season here cancels boats, not days. The Underground River runs on most rainy days because the cave does not care about rain — what stops it is the sea at Sabang, and suspensions cluster June to September when the swell is up. Honda Bay depends on wind and waves rather than rain, the bay is comparatively sheltered, and it mostly still runs. Rain arrives as short afternoon downpours and mornings are often clear, which is why every tour in this city leaves between 06:30 and 08:30. And in August and September this city is now being named the safest base in Palawan — the first time it has beaten El Nido on the merits.

The core fact

It is the sea that cancels, not the rain

Wet season here does not cancel the cave — it cancels the boat. Rain falls as short afternoon downpours from June to October and mornings are often clear; the Underground River runs on most rainy days. What stops it is the sea. Boats have to nose onto an open beach through South China Sea surf, and the Coast Guard suspends the crossing when the swell is up — clustered June to September. If the river is on your list in those months, keep a spare day.

This is the single most useful thing to understand about travelling here between June and October, and almost no guide states it. The cave is a cave. It is dry, it is lit by a boatman's spotlight, and the weather above the limestone is irrelevant to the 45 minutes you spend inside it. What is not irrelevant is the 20–30 minute outrigger crossing from Sabang wharf around the headland, which lands on an open beach through South China Sea surf.

So when a wet-season trip is cancelled, the phrase you will hear is that the Coast Guard suspended the crossing. That call is made in the morning, at the wharf, on sea state. It happens far more in July, August and September than in June or October, because the southwest swell is what drives it.

The correct response is a buffer day. Book the river for day two of a four-day trip rather than the last morning, and a suspension costs you a lie-in instead of the trip. The cancellations page works through the refund mechanics and the backup plan.

The 2026 development

August and September: the months this city wins

Counter-intuitively, August and September are when Puerto Princesa beats El Nido outright: the river runs year-round, Honda Bay is comparatively sheltered, and the city has the island's best wifi and its only real hospitals. In the monsoon it is the safest base in Palawan.

This is new, and it is worth stating plainly because it inverts the usual advice. A June 2026 forum thread asking where to base yourself in Palawan for August and September produced an answer that would have been unthinkable five years ago: Puerto Princesa, not El Nido.

The reasoning holds up. The river runs year-round and is the one Palawan headline act that does not depend on a boat trip between islands. Honda Bay is manageable in rain because it sits on the sheltered east coast, while El Nido's lagoons are on the exposed west side and its island-hopping tours are exactly what the southwest monsoon cancels. And when a day does get written off, this city has the island's best wifi, its only real hospitals, two malls, a functioning restaurant scene and a hundred chaolong houses. El Nido has a beach in the rain.

So the honest wet-season Palawan itinerary is not "go north anyway" or "go somewhere else". It is: base here, do the river and Honda Bay, add a day trip on the best forecast day, and treat El Nido as a dry-season proposition. The comparison page makes the same argument for the rest of the year, and reaches the opposite conclusion.

How to plan around it

Four rules for a June-to-October trip

None of these are difficult and together they turn a risky trip into an ordinary one at half the price.

One: build a buffer day behind the river. Put the Underground River on day two or three, never on the morning of your flight out. A suspension then costs you nothing but a rearranged breakfast.

Two: book the earliest pickup you can get. Mornings are the clear part of a wet-season day and pickups run 06:30–08:30. The 15:00 slot is the one that gets turned back when the swell builds.

Three: watch the forecast for wind, not rain. Sea state is what decides your day. A 90% chance of rain with a light onshore breeze is a perfectly good river day; a dry morning with a 25-knot southwester is not.

Four: front-load the west coast. If Sabang, Port Barton, Nagtabon or Napsan are on your list, put them on the calmest forecast morning of the whole trip and let the rain-proof city days fill in around them.

When the day is written off

The rainy-day fallback list

01

The chaolong crawl

WORTH IT₱60–120 a bowl

The city's own dish and its best story, and there are said to be at least seven houses within a minute of the airport. Bona's does a beef stew bowl at ₱85 with Vietnamese coffee at ₱50. This is the correct thing to do with a cancelled morning.

02

Plaza Cuartel and the cathedral

WORTH IT20–30 min · free to ~₱20

The most sobering twenty minutes in Palawan, and it is a shaded waterfront plaza a block from the port. 139 men died here on 14 December 1944 and 11 escaped. The cathedral next door is a 15-minute pairing.

03

SM City and Robinsons

DEPENDSFree · aircon

Recommend without shame. Cinemas, pharmacies, ATMs with shorter queues than the airport's, and the only reliable air-conditioning between 12:00 and 15:00. Robinsons is more central, SM is newer.

04

The Butterfly Garden

DEPENDS₱60–150 · 45–60 min

Mostly covered, 08:30–17:00, and rates 4.3 stars. The Palaw'an demonstrations are the reason to go rather than the butterflies. Fee figures conflict between ₱60 and ₱150 — ask at the gate.

05

Eat your way through the afternoon

WORTH IT₱100–1,200

A carinderia lunch is ₱100, KaLui does a set for two at ₱795 and is closed Sundays, and Kinabuchs opens at 16:00 for crocodile sisig at ₱350–600 and tamilok at ₱150–300.

The other wet-season variable

The power grid, and why your room choice matters more in the rain

Palawan runs on an isolated island grid with a single high-voltage backbone, and it shows: rotational brownouts and scheduled 8–11 hour maintenance outages recur, and in May 2026 one corroded line blacked out the whole province for around 13 hours. Midrange hotels and above run generators; budget guesthouses often do not. If air-conditioning at 2am matters to you, book a room that advertises one.

Storms and the grid interact badly. Rotational brownouts and scheduled maintenance outages are a year-round feature of an isolated island grid, and weather adds unscheduled ones on top. If a cancelled boat day is going to be spent in your room, the room needs to work.

The practical filter: book somewhere that advertises a generator. Midrange properties and above almost all run one; budget guesthouses often do not. The connectivity page has the full grid picture and the May 2026 province-wide outage, and the where-to-stay page has the properties.

Questions people actually search

Wet-season questions, answered

Is the Underground River open in the rainy season?

Yes, and it runs on most rainy days. The cave is unaffected by rain; what cancels the trip is the Coast Guard suspending the 20 to 30 minute boat crossing at Sabang when the swell is up. Those suspensions cluster from June to September.

Should I visit Puerto Princesa in August or September?

It is a genuinely good call. A June 2026 forum thread named this city the safest base in all of Palawan for those two months, because the river runs year-round, Honda Bay is sheltered, and the city has the island's best wifi and its only real hospitals.

Does Honda Bay run in the wet season?

Mostly yes. Honda Bay depends on wind and waves rather than rain and the bay is comparatively sheltered on the east coast. Expect a choppier 40-minute crossing from the Sta. Lourdes wharf and murkier water, rather than a cancellation.

How many buffer days do I need in wet season?

1, placed behind the Underground River. Book it for day 2 or 3 of the trip rather than the morning of your flight out, and a suspension costs you a rearranged breakfast instead of the whole reason you came.

Does it rain all day in Puerto Princesa?

Rarely. Wet-season rain arrives as short afternoon downpours and mornings are frequently clear, which is why every tour in the city departs between 06:30 and 08:30. Even October, the wettest month at 266 mm, spreads it over 21 days rather than dumping it.

Is it cheaper to travel in the rainy season?

Yes, materially. September and October are the cheapest room months of the year, tour boats run half empty, and the Underground River permit that needs 1 to 2 weeks of lead time in February is often available within a day or two.

What is the worst month to visit?

October on paper, at 266 mm of rain over 21 days. July to September is worse in practice if your plans are on the west coast, because that is when the swell hits Sabang and Port Barton hardest and island-hopping days get lost.

What do I do if my tour is cancelled?

Eat chaolong for ₱60-120, do Plaza Cuartel and the cathedral in 45 minutes, and take the malls seriously between 12:00 and 15:00. The rainy-day page ranks every indoor option in the city with prices and opening hours.
