Days one and two are settled and boring in the best way — city tour and fireflies, then the Underground River, exactly as in the two-day build. Day three is where itineraries go wrong, because the obvious answer is not always the right one. The three real options: Honda Bay at ₱1,500–2,000, a Sabang overnight wrapped around the river day, or Nagtabon Beach by motorbike at ₱500–600 for the day. Three days of tours and food land at ₱6,400–9,500 (~$110–164) per person.
Land, the city, the fireflies
Airport to hotel in ten minutes

The Underground River
Pickup, and push for the earliest slot

Day three, ranked
Honda Bay island hopping
The default third day, and the verdict turns entirely on sequence. Three islands now — Starfish, Luli, Cowrie — with Pambato Reef swapped in on some routes. If El Nido and Coron are already booked, this will be the worst snorkelling of your trip and a local put it plainly: after El Nido island hopping it will be a bore. If Palawan begins and ends here, it is a genuinely good shallow-water day with a buffet, and the Klook joiner at about $32 includes the island fees that cheap local tours add later at ₱50–150 each.
A Sabang overnight, wrapped around the river day
The veteran move, and the one most three-day visitors should take. Sleep in Sabang the night before the cave instead of driving out at dawn, take the 08:00 first boat before the city convoys land, then have the whole afternoon on a beach that empties after 16:00. Daluyon rates 9.3–9.4 from 577 reviews at $121–135 and Four Points $156–162, with budget rooms from ₱600. The risk is real: if the sea closes the crossing you are stranded in a village with no ATM.
Nagtabon Beach by motorbike
The cheapest good day here and the one locals take. 30 km west, now concrete road the whole way, no entrance fee, cottages ₱200–300, meals ₱150–200. There is no signal, no ATM and no reef, and there are real rip currents with drownings reported — swim conservatively and do not go out alone. By tricycle it is ₱600 one way or about ₱1,200 return with waiting, which makes the ₱500–600 motorbike the sensible option if you can ride.
A Port Barton day trip
It is the anti-El-Nido and it is rising fast in the 2025–2026 threads for good reason — quieter, better snorkelling, a slow little beach town. As a day trip from here it is 15 hours door to door with a 05:00 pickup and a 21:00 return, which is a worse version of a place that deserves two nights. Do it as an overnight on the way north instead: the SBE van is ₱600 and 3.5 hours, six departures a day from 06:00.

Three things sold as day trips from Puerto Princesa are not day trips. El Nido is 5–6 hours each way. San Vicente's Long Beach is 3–4 hours each way on a bus timetable that makes same-day return absurd. Balabac is 8–12 hours each way — a van to Buliluyan Port, then a boat. Those turquoise sandbar photographs cost you four days, not one.
Honda Bay, if that is what you chose
Out to Sta. Lourdes wharf
The wharf is 40–50 minutes north of town. A multicab from San Jose is ₱25–50, a chartered tricycle ₱300–500 one way, or ₱500 from the airport. Joiner tours include the transfer. Bring your environmental fee receipt from the river day — it is valid about a year and covers both, so do not pay ₱150 twice.
First island
Cash at each landing on cheap local tours: Starfish ₱50–100, Luli ₱70–120, Cowrie ₱100–150. Mask hire is ₱150 and aqua shoes another ₱150. This is why a ₱1,300 tour and a ₱1,880 tour cost the same by lunchtime, and why the platform joiners that bundle the fees are the honest comparison.
Luli, which submerges at high tide
Luli is short for lulubog-lilitaw — it sinks and reappears with the tide. Expect about 20 minutes at some stops if your boat is running a tight schedule, which is the second-most-common complaint in the review corpus after the coral. Ask your operator the timings before you board.
Buffet on Cowrie
Cowrie is the biggest island and the one with real facilities — cottages ₱50–500, pavilions to ₱1,500, massages ₱350–500 an hour, and a do-it-yourself lunch at ₱250–300 if your tour does not feed you. The starfish at Starfish Island have largely left the landing area under traffic; if you see one, keep it in the water.
Back to the city
Most joiners return between 15:30 and 16:30, which leaves the evening open. On a three-day trip this is the night for the Baywalk grill stalls from 17:00 or a last chaolong. If you fly out tomorrow, the airport is 8 to 10 minutes from downtown.
Do not take a third day without a job for it
The confessed mistake on the forums is over-allocation, not under-allocation, and a purposeless third day here is how it happens.
A traveller with two nights total for a whole Philippine trip was told she would be "travelling more than enjoying". Nobody in the reachable threads regretted giving this city only one night; several regretted giving it three. If the answer is "we might just look around", spend that day in El Nido or Port Barton instead — the van is ₱650 and 5½ hours, and there are seven departures a day.
The one exception is weather. Between June and September the Coast Guard suspends the Sabang crossing when the swell is up, and a spare day is the difference between rebooking the river and losing it. In those months, a third day with no plan is itself the plan.
Wet season here does not cancel the cave — it cancels the boat. Rain falls as short afternoon downpours from June to October and mornings are often clear; the Underground River runs on most rainy days. What stops it is the sea. Boats have to nose onto an open beach through South China Sea surf, and the Coast Guard suspends the crossing when the swell is up — clustered June to September. If the river is on your list in those months, keep a spare day.
