Where every van, bus and tricycle charter starts. Pickups for the long days run 04:00–08:30, so sleeping downtown or near the airport is worth real minutes.

Hours are typical door-to-door driving times in normal conditions, not best cases, and they assume the North Palawan Highway is behaving. Fares are in each note rather than computed from distance, because the two do not track: Port Barton is 3h30 for ₱600 and El Nido is 5h30 for ₱650. Coron is deliberately absent — there is no road to it at all, which is the entire answer to that question.

Honda Bay
The shortest excursion in the region and the only one you can book at breakfast. Three islands — Starfish, Luli, Cowrie — ₱32 on Klook with fees and buffet included, 4.6★ from 1,733 reviews. The catch is the snorkelling, which rates 4.0 across 2,040 TripAdvisor reviews and will be the worst of your trip if El Nido, Coron or Port Barton are on it.
Ugong Rock
Caving through a limestone tower and a zipline off the top, run by the Tagabinet community association, 4.4–4.5★ from 664 reviews. It is 20 minutes off the Sabang road, so treat it as an add-on to the river day rather than a trip of its own — as a standalone it is 2h40 of van for 90 minutes of fun.
Nagtabon Beach
The locals' cove, 30 km west, 4.4/5 from 219 reviews and no entrance fee. Motorbike ₱500–600 a day is the right way; a tricycle is ₱600 one way or about ₱1,200 return with waiting. No signal, no ATM, no reef, and rip currents that have drowned people — swim between the flags and watch the kids.
Puerto Princesa Underground River
The worst time ratio on this list — 45 minutes in the cave for a 7–10 hour day — and still the one thing here that El Nido cannot duplicate. 4.4/5 from 5,813 reviews. Take the joiner tour, because the permit is what sells out, not the seat.
Dolphin watching, Puerto Princesa Bay
Half a day, back by lunch, spinner dolphins and an explicit no-sighting guarantee. It has effectively vanished from the big platforms — zero GetYourGuide and Klook listings — so you arrange it locally or not at all. A decent habagat-season answer when Honda Bay is choppy.
Estrella Falls, Narra
Multi-tier swimming falls in a picnic park, entrance about ₱50 plus a cottage. Fine for an hour, not worth 3h10 in a van by itself. It earns its place only inside a south-Palawan loop with Narra's beaches and Rasa Island, and Rasa is open July to December only.
Port Barton
The only far trip that works as a day, barely: 05:00 pickup, 21:00 return, turtles over seagrass at Turtle Spot and the best easy coral in the region at Twin Reef, 4.5–4.6★ from 79–264 reviews. Reviewers say it is worth it and then say six hours of travel in a day is a lot. They are right. Go for a night.
San Vicente Long Beach
14 km of the longest white beach in the Philippines, nearly empty, and a bus timetable that goes out at 08:30, 12:00 and 14:00 and comes back at 03:00, 06:00 and 14:30. Do the arithmetic and there is no day trip in there. Overnight it, or stop on the way north.
El Nido
Five and a half hours each way for the lagoons, which means 11 hours in a seat for perhaps three on the water. There is a GetYourGuide product that sells exactly this day and we take it apart in detail. Give El Nido two nights or give it nothing.
Balabac
A 04:00 van 5–6 hours south to Buliluyan Port, then 2–4 hours by boat with no public ferry. The turquoise sandbars are real and they cost you four days. The one GetYourGuide listing sits at $421 and 3.0★ from 23 reviews — the worst-rated product in this market.
Three of these are not day trips
Three things sold as day trips from Puerto Princesa are not day trips. El Nido is 5–6 hours each way. San Vicente's Long Beach is 3–4 hours each way on a bus timetable that makes same-day return absurd. Balabac is 8–12 hours each way — a van to Buliluyan Port, then a boat. Those turquoise sandbar photographs cost you four days, not one.
Search volume says otherwise, which is why this page exists. People type "El Nido day trip from Puerto Princesa" every day, and there is a real, bookable, well-reviewed-enough product that answers the search — and we have priced it and told you who it is actually for. Almost nobody.
The tell is always the pickup time. Anything collecting you at 04:00 or 05:00 is not managing your comfort, it is managing arithmetic that does not work. Port Barton's packaged day starts at 05:00 and ends at 21:00 for three hours in the water. Balabac vans leave at 04:00 and still need a boat at the other end.
The honest structure of a Palawan trip is the one the 2024–2026 forum threads keep converging on: El Nido 4–6 nights, Coron 2–4 if you dive, Puerto Princesa 0–2. Use this city for the river, the food and the flights, and move — do not commute.

Local operators quote ₱600 for the Port Barton van and ₱650 for the El Nido van at the terminal counter — check every platform price against those two numbers before you book anything below.
The months that cancel these
Wet season here does not cancel the cave — it cancels the boat. Rain falls as short afternoon downpours from June to October and mornings are often clear; the Underground River runs on most rainy days. What stops it is the sea. Boats have to nose onto an open beach through South China Sea surf, and the Coast Guard suspends the crossing when the swell is up — clustered June to September. If the river is on your list in those months, keep a spare day.
Counter-intuitively, August and September are when Puerto Princesa beats El Nido outright: the river runs year-round, Honda Bay is comparatively sheltered, and the city has the island's best wifi and its only real hospitals. In the monsoon it is the safest base in Palawan.
In practice: from June to September, put the road trips first and the boat trips second. The Underground River runs on most rainy days and only stops when the Coast Guard suspends the Sabang crossing; Honda Bay and Port Barton are the ones that lose days. Dolphin watching and whale sharks run April to October, which is the exact inverse — so the wet months are not empty, they are just differently shaped.

What every one of these days assumes
Grab does not operate in Puerto Princesa. Not reduced, not patchy — absent. Guides that tell you to just grab a Grab from the airport were written from a desk. Ride-hailing firms have been reported as eyeing the city and none had filed for a franchise at the last check, so treat any app that does show cars as a bonus. The system here is the tricycle: ₱15–25 a hop shared, ₱100–150 to charter the whole thing from the airport into town. Agree the fare before you get in and you will never have a problem.
Draw cash in the city, and draw more than feels reasonable. Tours, tricycles, markets and most restaurants are cash. Foreign cards are charged about ₱250 per withdrawal at nearly every bank and per-transaction limits run ₱10,000–20,000. Airport machines empty at weekends and around the 15th and 30th. Sabang is effectively an ATM desert — arrive with the whole stay in your pocket. Always decline the machine's offer to charge you in your own currency.
One more assumption worth naming: every price on this page is per person unless it says otherwise, and every van fare is a seat rather than a vehicle. Chartering the whole thing — ₱7,200–9,000 to El Nido, ₱600–1,200 for a half day of city touring by tricycle — is a different product and usually the right one for four or more people.
