The Underground River day
Coffee before the van
Itoy's Coffee Haus on Rizal Avenue opens at 06:00 and is the only reliable pre-tour breakfast in town, ₱180–300. Most hotels will not have food out before 06:30. Eat now — the buffet at Sabang is five hours away.
Hotel pickup

Over the ridge to Sabang
76–90 km, 1.5–2.5 hours — budget two. The road climbs the karst ridge and this is the leg that makes motion-sickness-prone passengers unhappy; sit forward and open a window. Doing it yourself instead: shared van ₱150–450, or the bus at ₱125–150 and three hours, first departure around 06:30.
Wharf, permit check, outrigger
Fees are collected here in cash even on tours sold as all-inclusive: ₱150 city environmental fee, ₱5–10 terminal. Then a 20–30 minute outrigger around the headland to the park beach, a short jungle boardwalk where the macaques work the crowd, and a second queue for the paddle canoe.
45 minutes in the cave
About 1.5 km in and back, of 4.3 km navigable and 8.2 km total, turning at the Cathedral chamber where the ceiling is 60–65 m overhead. A compulsory audio guide narrates. Photographs fail — it is genuinely dark, flash ruins it, phone night modes smear. Expect ceiling drip and a whiff of guano.
Buffet lunch at Sabang
Included on almost every joiner and the reason the no-lunch products at ₱3,105 rate 3.8★ — Sabang has few places to eat and they run out. If you have an hour spare, the mangrove paddle boat is ₱200–350 for 30–45 minutes, or the Sabang X zipline is ₱550–750 for 800 m across the cove.
The road back
Two hours again, usually with a stop at a souvenir shop nobody asked for. Ugong Rock at Tagabinet is on this road — caving plus zipline for ₱500–650 combined, community-run, and the best 90-minute add-on if your operator offers it.
Back in the city, and that is your day
Arrival runs 16:30 to 18:00 depending on the queue you hit. The firefly pickup left at 17:30, so it is not happening. What is: the Baywalk grill stalls from about 17:00, where paluto seafood runs ₱300–500 all in, or KaLui at ₱795 for the seafood set for two if you booked — it is closed Sundays.
The city and fireflies day
Plaza Cuartel and the cathedral
Twenty minutes of walking and the most historically weighted stop in the city. On 14 December 1944, 139 American prisoners of war were burned alive in air-raid shelters here; 11 escaped. Entry is free to about ₱20 and unverified. The blue Immaculate Conception Cathedral next door is free.
The city tour proper
Half-day joiners run ₱600–900 per person, or charter a tricycle for ₱1,000–1,200 and set your own order. The stops with substance are the crocodile farm (free to ~₱50, conflicting sources, 08:00–17:00) and Binuatan Creations, where you can try the handlooms.
Baker's Hill or Mitra's Ranch, briefly
Both are free to enter and both are filler. Baker's Hill is a hopia bakery with gardens, 4.0/5 from 982 reviews, open 07:00–20:00, hopia ₱50–120 — and it carries real animal-welfare criticism in recent reviews. Mitra's Ranch is free with a Honda Bay panorama and ₱100 horseback. Fifteen minutes each, then leave.
The long lunch you skipped in version A
KaLui, 369 Rizal Avenue, is the city's definitive meal — ₱795 set for two, mains from ₱245, shoes off at the door, 4.4/5 from 2,545 reviews, and lunch service is 11:00–14:00 with no booking usually needed. Closed Sundays. The cheap alternative is a chaolong house: a bowl of beef stew chaolong is ₱85.
The furnace hours

Thirty to forty-five minutes on the water
About 1.2 km of mangrove, paddled in near-silence, with the fireflies in the trees and sometimes bioluminescent plankton in the water. Land, do the river, and drive to El Nido
This chain is asked about constantly on the forums and talked down every single time. The arithmetic is not close.
Your flight lands, the river tour has already left, and even if it had not, it returns between 16:30 and 18:00 — against a last van north at 17:00 and 5½ hours of driving. There is also no official luggage storage at Sabang. Workarounds exist, and they are exactly as fragile as they sound: a private driver holds your bags, or a Sabang restaurant does.

Three things sold as day trips from Puerto Princesa are not day trips. El Nido is 5–6 hours each way. San Vicente's Long Beach is 3–4 hours each way on a bus timetable that makes same-day return absurd. Balabac is 8–12 hours each way — a van to Buliluyan Port, then a boat. Those turquoise sandbar photographs cost you four days, not one.
