Quick answer
WORTH IT Fly from Manila. The ferries are for motorbike shippers, sea-romance travellers and people who will not board a plane.

Fly, and fly from Manila. The route runs about 179 flights a month on Cebu Pacific and Philippine Airlines, takes 1 h 15–25, and costs ₱1,500–3,500 (~$26–60) off-peak against ₱4,000–6,000+ on peak dates. Cebu, Iloilo, Davao and Clark are the other four routes and there are no international flights. Book Manila 4–8 weeks out; piso-fare sales regularly put the base under ₱1,000. The 2GO ferry from Manila costs ₱2,656–3,387 and takes 28–29 hours, which is 27 hours slower than a promo flight that often costs less.

Five domestic routes, two carriers, verified August 2026. AirAsia's Manila route was cut in June 2026, which leaves Cebu Pacific and Philippine Airlines as the entire market.

There is also no Puerto Princesa to El Nido flight. El Nido's Lio airport is served from Manila only, on AirSwift, at about $80–140+ — which is why the 5 h 30 van exists.

The fare risk

Two airlines is thinner than it sounds

AirAsia's Manila route was cut in June 2026. That leaves Cebu Pacific and Philippine Airlines competing on the only route most visitors use, and fewer carriers means less price pressure exactly when you need it.

In practice: off-peak Manila fares are still cheap at ₱1,500–3,500, and Cebu Pacific's piso-fare sales regularly put the base under ₱1,000 before taxes. The risk is concentrated on peak dates — Holy Week, the Christmas to New Year window, and long domestic weekends — where fares run ₱4,000–6,000+ and sell out rather than just getting expensive.

So the booking rule is simple: 4 to 8 weeks out for Manila, earlier if your dates fall in Holy Week or 20 December to 2 January. Watch for the sale rather than the date. And take a morning arrival if you have the choice — because the airport is 3 km from downtown you can convert a morning landing into a full first day, which is worth more than a ₱500 fare saving.

One planning shape worth knowing: fly into Puerto Princesa, spend two nights, van north to El Nido, and fly out of Lio to Manila. No backtracking, and it turns the 280 km road into a one-way rather than a return. The comparison page argues the case.

When to buy the flight

Fare behaviour on this route is unusually predictable because there are only two sellers and one dominant origin.

3–4 months out
Holy Week and 20 Dec – 2 JanDomestic demand doubles fares and the route sells out rather than just repricing. Underground River permits go at the same time — see the events calendar for the dates that matter.
4–8 weeks out
Everything else from ManilaThe sweet spot for a ₱1,500–2,500 fare. Set an alert rather than watching daily; the sales are what move this route, not the calendar.
Any time a sale runs
Cebu Pacific piso faresThey regularly put the Manila base fare under ₱1,000. Book the sale and build the trip around it — that is how most Filipinos plan this exact journey.
2–3 weeks out
Cebu, Iloilo, Davao, ClarkThin frequencies — 7 to 55 flights a month — so seats matter more than price. If a specific day is essential, book it as soon as your dates are fixed.
Days ahead
The 2GO or Montenegro ferryWeekly departures, so the constraint is the calendar rather than capacity. Manila leaves Friday 17:30 and Iloilo Saturday 19:00 — miss it and you wait a week.

Both are confirmed running in 2026. Both are slow in a way that is easy to underestimate — and one widely-quoted duration figure is simply wrong.

On the duration: one aggregator quotes about 17 hours for the Manila run while publishing a timetable that departs Friday 17:30 and arrives Saturday 22:30. The timetable is the fact and the 17-hour claim contradicts it — plan on 28–29 hours. Milagrosa's status on the Iloilo–Cuyo run is unverified; only Montenegro is confirmed.

The ferry verdict

Who should actually take the boat

Three groups, and if you are not one of them a promo flight is cheaper and 27 hours faster.

Motorbike shippers. The 2GO vessel is a RORO, so bikes and cars roll on. If you are riding Palawan and want your own machine rather than a ₱500–700 a day rental, this is the only way to get it there and it is a genuinely good reason.

Sea-romance travellers. Twenty-nine hours across the Sulu Sea with a cabin, a deck and no signal is a real experience and cheap at ₱2,656–3,387. Say that is what you want and the maths stops mattering.

Fear-of-flying cases. The obvious one, and the ferry is a proper ship rather than a small craft.

For everyone else the arithmetic is brutal: the ferry costs roughly what an unsold flight costs, more than a piso-fare flight, and consumes a day and a night of a trip that is probably five days long. The Iloilo route has one genuine extra draw — the 8-hour stop at Cuyo, an island most visitors to Palawan never see. That is a reason to take it. Saving money is not.

Finding the flight

There are only two sellers on the Manila route, so a comparison search is mostly useful for spotting when a sale is live and for pricing the Manila-in, El Nido-out shape that avoids backtracking.

Connecting

Arriving from outside the Philippines

You will clear immigration in Manila or Cebu, not here — the airport has no scheduled international flights. Budget the connection properly.

Allow three hours between an international arrival at Manila and a domestic departure. NAIA's terminal transfers are the part that eats the time, and a missed domestic connection on a route with two carriers is an expensive mistake. Cebu is a simpler airport and two hours is workable there.

Bring your eTravel registration done before you fly and your passport valid well beyond arrival — the visa and entry page has the checklist and links to the Bureau of Immigration's own site, which is the only source worth trusting on day counts.

If your inbound lands in Manila late, sleeping there and taking a morning flight is usually better than a midnight domestic connection — and a morning arrival in Puerto Princesa buys you a usable first day, because the airport is 3 km from downtown.

Questions people actually search

Getting there, answered

How long is the flight from Manila to Puerto Princesa?

1 hour 15 to 1 hour 25, on Cebu Pacific or Philippine Airlines, with about 179 flights a month between them — five to six daily. Fares run ₱1,500–3,500 off-peak and ₱4,000–6,000+ on peak dates.

Which airlines fly to Puerto Princesa?

Only Cebu Pacific and Philippine Airlines. AirAsia's Manila route was cut in June 2026, so two carriers now cover all five domestic routes: Manila, Cebu, Iloilo, Davao and Clark.

Are there international flights to Puerto Princesa?

No scheduled international flights as of August 2026, despite the airport's name. Whether charters are planned for winter 2026–27 is unverified. Every international visitor connects through Manila or Cebu and clears immigration there.

How far in advance should I book the flight?

Four to eight weeks for Manila, which is where ₱1,500–2,500 fares live. Three to four months if you are travelling in Holy Week or between 20 December and 2 January, when the route sells out rather than just getting expensive.

How long is the ferry from Manila to Puerto Princesa?

28 to 29 hours. 2GO departs Manila Pier 4 on Friday at 17:30 and arrives Saturday at 22:30, with the return leaving Sunday 04:30. One aggregator claims 17 hours while publishing that same timetable — the timetable is right and the claim is wrong.

Is the ferry cheaper than flying?

Not reliably. Fares run ₱2,656–3,387, which is roughly what a normal flight costs and more than a piso-fare sale. Take the boat if you are shipping a motorbike on the RORO, if you actively want the crossing, or if you will not fly.

Can I get to Puerto Princesa from Iloilo or Cuyo by boat?

Yes. Montenegro runs Iloilo–Cuyo–Puerto Princesa, departing Saturday at 19:00 and taking about 36 hours including an 8-hour stop at Cuyo, for ₱2,662–3,461. The Cuyo stop is the real reason to take it. Milagrosa's status on this run is unverified.

Is there a flight from Puerto Princesa to El Nido?

No. El Nido's Lio airport is served from Manila only, on AirSwift, at about $80–140+. From here it is a 280 km road: ₱650 on a 5 h 30 Lexxus van or ₱651–998 on the Cherry Bus.
