Eight hours in port at Puerto Princesa: what actually fits

Quick answer
DEPENDS Honda Bay or a city circuit fits an eight-hour call. The Underground River does not, at any price.

Two facts decide your day before you book anything. First, the Underground River is 2 to 2.5 hours each way against an all-aboard deadline, and forum experts say bluntly that an 08:00 to 16:00 call cannot safely fit it — the Norwegian Sun's 1 March 2026 call was named in exactly that thread. Second, the ship sells that same trip at $165–210 and up to a reported ~$600, against $38–46 booked independently. What does fit: Honda Bay, 40–50 minutes from the wharf, or a city circuit of Plaza Cuartel, the cathedral, Binuatan, the crocodile farm and lunch by the water.

Why this page exists

Cruise passengers are the newest arrivals here, and nobody writes for them

This is the fastest-moving and least-covered segment in the city, and the gap between what ships sell and what is actually possible is the widest we found anywhere in Palawan.

The region recorded about 40 cruise calls in 2024, recovered from zero during the pandemic, and Puerto Princesa is the region's main cruise port. The traveller-forum evidence tracks it: three of the six newest threads on the city forum between January and June 2026 came from cruise passengers, with the Norwegian Sun's 1 March 2026 call, 08:00 to 16:00, named explicitly in one of them.

What those threads ask is always the same thing — can we do the Underground River — and the answer they get from the regulars is no. One January 2026 reply put it as plainly as it can be put: there is no way to do the river trip given those time constraints, and 08:00 docking plus two to two and a half hours of driving each way against a 16:00 all-aboard is very risky. The reply is correct.

The second thing those threads ask is where the beach is, and the answer is harder: a destination expert with 25,000+ posts answered a cruise passenger in June 2026 that this is "a workaday Filipino town" with no quality beach within a two-hour radius of the port. Honda Bay's sandbars are the realistic sea day and Nagtabon is 45–60 minutes each way with no facilities and real rip currents. Plan for a bay day, not a beach day.

The price gap

The ship's price against the independent price

This is the same boat, the same cave and the same buffet. The gap is real, it is documented in the review corpus, and it is the single most useful thing on this page — but read the timing warning above before you act on it, because a cheaper trip you cannot get back from is not a bargain.

Prices checked August 2026. The ship excursion buys you one thing the independent booking cannot: the ship waits for its own excursions and does not wait for you. On a tight call that is worth real money — which is exactly why the honest answer is to buy a shorter independent trip rather than a cheaper version of a trip that does not fit.

Hour by hour

The city circuit, 08:00 to 16:00

08:00

Alongside, and off the ship

Clear the terminal, and settle your transport before you leave it. There is no Grab in this city — tricycles are the system. A chartered tricycle for city touring is ₱600–1,200 for a half day, and shared hops are ₱12–25. Agree the fare before you get in and you will never have a problem.

08:45

Plaza Cuartel and the cathedral

Twenty minutes and the most historically weighted stop here. 139 American prisoners of war were burned alive in air-raid shelters on this ground on 14 December 1944; 11 escaped and the survivors' accounts drove the Great Raid at Cabanatuan. Entry is free to about ₱20 — the fee is not consistently published. The blue cathedral beside it is free.

09:45

Binuatan Creations

Working handlooms weaving buri and tikog. You can sit at a loom and try it, and what you buy was made in the room. This is the stop that gives a shore day something to take home that is not from a mall — and unlike most souvenir stops on a cruise circuit, it is a genuine workshop.

10:45

The crocodile farm

Properly the Palawan Wildlife Rescue and Conservation Center: government-run since 1987, open 08:00–17:00, entry free to about ₱50 depending on which source you believe, and 575 TripAdvisor reviews. It is a working breeding and rescue facility rather than a zoo. The baby-crocodile photo op is optional and you can decline it.

12:00

Lunch by the water

Badjao Seafront is the daytime option, open 10:00 and built out over the water on stilts — dishes ₱125–550, a seafood platter ₱1,150, about ₱500–900 a head, and it is cash only. Be warned that the view beats the food. KaLui at ₱795 for the set for two serves lunch 11:00–14:00 and is closed Sundays. The Baywalk grill stalls do not fire up until about 17:00, so they are not a lunch plan.

13:30

The furnace hours, spent indoors

13:00 to 16:00 is the worst of the heat. Robinsons Place Palawan and SM City are free to enter, air-conditioned and have pharmacies — genuinely the right call with children. The Palawan Heritage Center at ₱50 is better, if your call is Monday to Thursday: it opens 09:30–16:00 and closes Friday to Sunday.

14:30

The Baywalk and last shopping

The seafront promenade is free, walkable and the best photograph of the actual city. Buy cashews, hopia at ₱50–120 or woven work here rather than at the pier. Draw cash if you need it: foreign cards are charged about ₱250 per withdrawal at nearly every bank and machines empty at weekends.

15:00

Back at the ship, an hour early

Never plan to the all-aboard time. The port is close to the centre and traffic is not the problem — the problem is a tricycle that does not turn up and no ride-hailing app to fall back on. If you are one of the passengers who tried the river independently, this is the hour you will not have.

The sell-out problem

Ship days are exactly when the river sells out

The Underground River is permit-rationed, and the permit — not the bed, not the flight — is what sells out. A visitor entry permit must be secured before you travel to the park; the official notice board says no permit, no entry, and warns explicitly that turning up in Sabang, or sleeping there, guarantees you nothing. Roughly 95% of visitors let a tour operator hold the permit, and they are right to. Book 1–2 weeks ahead from December to May, and on any cruise-call day assume the day is gone.

This is the part that catches independent bookers. The park is permit-rationed, and cruise-call days absorb blocks of that capacity weeks ahead. A December 2025 reviewer documented it precisely: all tickets sold out during a cruise ship arrival and they could not access the site at all. If you are in port on a ship day and planning to book the river independently, you are competing for permits with the ship's own excursion allocation.

The daily cap itself is widely reported as 900 and one 2025 source says 600, with the park's own site publishing no number we could find — so treat the exact figure as unconfirmed. What is not in doubt is that a cap exists, that it binds from December to May, and that on a ship day it binds harder.

If your call is long enough to attempt the river at all, the sequence is: secure the permit or a tour weeks out, take the earliest possible start, and accept that the ship will not wait for an independent booking. The cruise-day river page works through that decision in full.

Port practicalities

What you need to know on the day

Typical call
08:00–16:00, with the Norwegian Sun's 1 March 2026 call the named example in the forum threads
Getting around
Tricycles only — there is no Grab. ₱12–25 a shared hop, ₱600–1,200 to charter one for a half day of touring
Honda Bay wharf
Sta. Lourdes, 40–50 minutes from the centre. Tricycle charter ₱300–500 one way, multicab ₱25–50
Money
Cash city. Foreign cards are charged about ₱250 per withdrawal and per-transaction limits run ₱10,000–20,000. Badjao Seafront is cash only
Fees
₱150 city environmental fee on any tour, valid about a year and covering both the river and Honda Bay. Keep the receipt
Plastics
Single-use plastics have been banned with fines since 16 April 2024 — bring a tote, and expect no plastic bag anywhere
Beaches
None of quality within two hours of the port. Honda Bay's sandbars at 40–50 minutes are the realistic sea day
Back on board
Target 15:00 for a 16:00 all-aboard. There is no ride-hailing fallback if a tricycle fails to appear

Cruise-day questions, answered

Can I do the Underground River on an 8am to 4pm port call?

No. It is 2 to 2.5 hours of driving each way plus wharf queues, and forum experts answering the January 2026 cruise threads say so bluntly. Even the ship's own excursion at $165–210 is a stretch on an 8-hour call; independently you would have no margin at all.

How much is the Underground River from a cruise ship?

Ship excursions run $165–210 typically, with one February 2025 reviewer reporting nearly $600 for what is a 45-minute boat ride. The identical trip booked independently is $38–46, or ₱2,000–2,500 with a local operator. The gap is real; the timing risk is also real.

What is the best thing to do in Puerto Princesa on a cruise call?

Honda Bay if you want the water — three islands, 40 to 50 minutes from the centre, ₱1,500–2,000 and back by mid-afternoon. A city circuit if you want the place itself: Plaza Cuartel, the cathedral, Binuatan and the crocodile farm in about 4 to 5 hours for ₱600–900.

Is there a beach near the Puerto Princesa cruise terminal?

Not a good one. A destination expert answering a cruise passenger in June 2026 was explicit: no quality beach within a two-hour radius of the port. Honda Bay's sandbars at 40 to 50 minutes are the realistic answer; Nagtabon is 45 to 60 minutes with no facilities and real rip currents.

Why do Underground River tickets sell out on cruise days?

Because the park is permit-rationed and ship excursions absorb blocks of capacity weeks ahead. A December 2025 reviewer found all tickets sold out during a ship arrival. The cap is widely reported as 900 a day and one 2025 source says 600 — the park publishes no figure we could find.

How do I get around Puerto Princesa from the port?

Tricycles, and only tricycles — Grab does not operate here despite what most guides say. Shared hops are ₱12–25 per person and chartering one for a half day of touring is ₱600–1,200. Agree the fare before you get in, and keep small notes.

Should I book a ship excursion or book independently?

Independently for anything that fits comfortably in the call, where you will pay roughly a third of the ship price. On the ship for anything marginal, because the ship waits for its own excursions and not for you. On an 8-hour call, that means booking Honda Bay or a city tour yourself and not attempting the river at all.

Staying on after the call
If you disembark
here, the city
is worth two days.

Passengers who end a cruise here or add nights around one get the version this whole site is built on: city tour and fireflies on day one, the Underground River on day two, at a total of about ₱4,850 to ₱7,450 per person in tours and food. Rooms are cheap by regional standards — pensions ₱800–1,700, budget chains ₱1,300–2,600, the best in town ₱4,500–9,000 across 411 properties.
